‘Bomber’ Harris [Bomber Harris]
(Arthur Harris 1892–1984) a controversial British military leader in charge of the campaign carried out by the ‘Bomber Command’ (= the part of the air force that drops bombs) during ↑World War II. He is considered to have been responsible for the success of this campaign, but has also been criticized for the number of ↑civilian deaths it caused, e.g. in the bombing of the German city of Dresden. Before the war he worked to develop bombs that were used against Iraqi tribesmen who were fighting against the British. He was made a ↑knight in 1942 and a ↑baronet in 1953.
